Léon Gaumont is today primarily remembered as a pioneer of the film industry. Together with Charles Pathé, Gaumont belonged to the leading figures and companies of the pre-Second World War film industry.
In 1895 Gaumont acquired the Comptoir Général de Photographie and became the distributor of the Photo-Jumelles cameras designed by Jules Carpentier. Gaumont also designed and manufactured the Stéréo-Block-Note and Stéréospidocameras. The robust tray-based Stéréodrome stereoscope served as a counterpart to Jules Richard’s Taxiphote.
