Alexis Gaudin & frère was a pioneer in stereoscopy. Alexis Gaudin began his career as a manufacturer of daguerreotype plates. He was assisted by his elder brother, Marc Antoine, who started producing daguerreotypes shortly after the introduction of the daguerreotype process.

In 1851, Alexis Gaudin took over publication of the photographic journal La Lumière. Together with his other brother, Charles, he founded Alexis Gaudin & frère. The company grew into a major publisher of stereoviews, with branches in Paris and London. A catalogue issued by the publisher in 1856 listed approximately 1,500 stereoview titles.

In 1854, Charles Gaudin patented a stereoscope design featuring a sliding-box focusing mechanism.
