Stereoscopy
Tags: Glossary / Stereoscopy basicsStereoscopy is a method of producing the perception of depth by presenting two slightly different images separately to each eye, corresponding to the viewpoints of the left and right eye. The brain combines these images through binocular vision, resulting in a single three-dimensional (3-D) visual impression.
The method is based on the principle of parallax, where objects at different distances appear displaced relative to each other when viewed from different positions. In stereoscopic systems, this effect is replicated by capturing or constructing image pairs with a horizontal offset approximating the interocular distance.
Stereoscopy can be implemented using optical devices such as a stereoscope.
