Richard Whiting patented several folding stereoscope designs between 1897 and 1904. The designs share a number of common features: a Holmes-Bates type stereoscope positioned at an inclined angle and mounted on a wooden box or frame. The first design is a single-view model, while the later patents depict multi-view viewers in which a stack of stereoviews can be flipped through. From the second patent onward, the name “View Outfit” was used to identify the design.

The single-view model was introduced to the market, but it is unclear whether all design features shown in the various patents were actually implemented in production models.
