The Canadian-born brothers William and Richard Whiting moved to the United States in 1891 and began selling stereoviews and stereoscopes. From 1894 onward, they worked as sales agents for the Keystone View Company. Richard also produced stereo photos as a photographer, which were published by Keystone.
In 1900, the brothers continued independently and founded their own stereoview publishing company in Cincinnati under the name Whiting View Company. The company published stereoviews until 1908, but ultimately could not compete with the large publishers that dominated the market in the United States.
After the closure of the publishing business, Whiting focused on the design and manufacture of stereoscopes. From 1913 onward, the company operated under the name The American Novelty Company. Its stereoscopes continued to be sold and supported until 1943, with the company maintaining a high standard of quality.
