Le Stéréorama appears at first glance to be a conventional chain-based stereoscope. However, the viewer is designed for viewing stereoviews printed on a paper roll. The interior of the housing contains two fixed rollers that cannot be removed. A roll of images must therefore be fully wound onto one of the rollers, with the end attached to the second roller. By turning the knobs, the images are advanced and viewed one by one.
Rolls exist for 32 and 48 stereoviews. The rolls are marked with the publisher’s name, La Stéréoscopie Française – 84, Rue d’Amsterdam, Paris. Le Stéréorama was likely produced exclusively for the rolled stereoview series of this publisher.
