Francis Frith was a photographer and publisher known for the photographs he made in Egypt, Palestine, and Syria.
Between 1856 and 1860 he undertook three journeys to the Near East. During these expeditions he photographed monuments of ancient Egypt and other landmarks using several cameras, including a stereo camera. The images were later published in England in various formats and achieved considerable commercial success.
The stereo photographs from Frith's first two journeys were published by Negretti & Zambra as paper and glass stereoviews. The stereoviews of Frith's third journey were published in the book Egypt, Nubia, and Ethiopia. Illustrated by One Hundred Stereoscopic Photographs.
Frith later established his own publishing company, which grew to become the largest publisher of photographic images in the United Kingdom.
