Ancient Egypt

Francis Frith embarked on his first journey to Egypt in 1856 as part of an ambitious photographic project. Two further expeditions to the Near East followed in 1857 and 1859. Frith was the first photographer to systematically document the monuments of Egypt.

While still in Egypt during his first trip, Frith sent one hundred stereo negatives to the London publisher Negretti & Zambra. The company issued the images as both paper and glass stereoviews, which proved to be a considerable commercial success.
