Winter
Also known as: STEWI
Region: Germany Period: 1890–1930 Occupation: Instrument maker Tag: WinterWinter’s family business was a small stereoscope manufacturer in Germany. The company was founded in 1904 by Emil Willi Winter in Leipzig-Connewitz. Initially, it produced several hand-held stereoscopes of its own design, but later its focus shifted to Holmes-Bates type viewers.
In the early 1920s, the company relocated to Langenbach, and in 1944 to Marktbreit. After Winter’s death, the business was continued by his son, Hans Willi Winter. The company continued producing stereoscopes into the 1980s and was ultimately dissolved in 1986.
Winter’s stereoscopes were primarily commissioned by other sellers, often unbranded or rebranded. As a result, the scale of Winter’s production remains unknown. Some stereoscopes were distributed under the STEWI brand (Stereo Winter).
