The slide tray in a tray-based stereoscope is used to load glass stereoviews. Depending on the type of stereoscope, a tray typically holds between 20 and 25 slides, which are placed vertically in grooves. Trays intended for thicker autochrome slides usually contain about half that number.

Slide trays are made of wood or bakelite. The bottom of the tray is usually open because most tray-based stereoscopes use a mechanism with metal fingers that lift the slide from below the device and through the tray.
