Hodent, Louis Joseph

Region: France    Period: 1850–1890    Occupation: Instrument maker / Inventor

Louis Joseph Hodent was a Parisian optician and manufacturer of stereoscopes. Between 1874 and 1886, he patented various optical devices, including three stereoscope designs. Hodent's company went bankrupt in 1890.

Hodent's 1883 patent describes a combination of a stereoscope and a graphoscope. The graphoscope is attached to the rear of the device. This type of combined viewer later became known as a Méga-stéréoscope, although it should be noted that in most examples the graphoscope is mounted on the upper side of the stereoscope rather than at the rear.
