Lewis, William H. combined stereoscope

Region: United States    Period: 1850–1890    Tag: Lewis

The design of the combined stereoscope and graphoscope has the appearance of a Holmes-Bates stereoscope mounted on a stand. A large lens for viewing ordinary photographs is mounted on top of the hood around the stereo lenses. There is also a model manufactured without the single lens. The lens panel and stereoview holder are attached to sliding metal rods.

William H. Lewis later patented a second design in which the stand consisted of a tripod, while the lens panel and stereoview holder were attached to lazy tongs. It is a compact viewer that may never have been produced.

William H. Lewis' patents of the combined stereoscope and graphoscope were assigned to E. & H. T. Anthony and Company.
