Anthony, E. & H.T.

Until 1880, the company was the principal producer of photographic equipment and accessories in the United States.
Edward Anthony opened a daguerreotype studio in 1841. From 1849, he started focussing on manufacturing, wholesaling, and publishing. In 1852, Edward’s brother Henry T. Anthony joined the firm as an active partner with responsibility for the manufacturing and technical aspects of the business.
E. & H. T. Anthony began importing stereoviews from Europe in 1858. From 1860 onward, the company started the production and distribution of paper stereoviews. It opened the Stereoscopic Emporium at 501 Broadway in New York. The gallery was entirely dedicated to stereoscopy.
The company imported stereoscopes from Europe and also manufactured stereoscopes. The stereoscope designs of Henry J. Lewis and William H. Lewis were assigned to E. & H. T. Anthony, which presumably manufactured the devices.
By the early 1870s the catalogue offered up to 11,000 views. E. & H. T. Anthony also published stereoviews of the American Civil War that were produced by Mathew Brady’s company and other photographers.
