Appleton & Company, D.

Also known as: New York Stereoscopic Company

Region: United States    Period: 1850–1890    Tag: D. Appleton & Co.

D. Appleton & Company was founded by Daniel Appleton in 1825. It was primarily a book publisher, but in 1853 the company became the first publisher in the United States to import and sell foreign stereoviews. From c. 1860, D. Appleton & Company merged with, or acquired, The New York Stereoscopic Company.

D. Appleton & Company distributed a variant of Loyd’s American Stereoscope and The Stereoscope for the Million, which was based on John Frederick Mascher’s Stereoscopic Book. The presence of a patent number on the viewer may indicate that D. Appleton & Company had acquired Mascher’s rights.
