Le Caténoscope is a stereoscope that combines features of both chain-based and tray-based viewers. Images can be easily changed by swapping slide trays, something that is more cumbersome in conventional chain-based stereoscopes.

Operation:
The glass stereoviews are placed in metal frames and inserted into a wooden tray positioned at the bottom of the viewer. By turning a lever on the right side clockwise, a slide is lifted from the tray and transported via a chain-based rotating mechanism. After viewing, the slide is deposited into a second tray located on the opposite side of the mechanism.

There was also a version of Le Caténoscope that functioned as a standard chain-based stereoscope, without the use of slide trays.
