The 8.5 x 17 cm format is the most widely used stereo format. It originated around 1850 and developed into an unofficial standard. The vast majority of stereoviews were produced in this format, including daguerreotypes and glass stereoviews, but most notably paper stereoviews that were published in very large quantities in the United States from the 1890s.
