8 & 9 was a trademark of stereoscope manufacturer Auguste Wytenhove. In 1898, Wytenhove sold his company to Louis Legendre. In 1902, Legendre’s business was acquired by Mattey, who continued the use of the 8 & 9 trademark. The logo appears on various chain-based stereoscopes produced by Mattey.
The name 8 & 9 is probably a humorous reference to the name Wytenhove. In French, 8 & 9 is pronounced huit et neuf, which sounds close to Wytenhove.
