Positive

Tags: Glossary / Photography processes

A positive is a photographic image in which the tonal values correspond to those of the original subject: light areas appear light and dark areas appear dark. Positives are intended for direct viewing without further reversal.

A positive image may be produced either directly from the negative as in direct positive processes, or indirectly by printing from a negative. Positives can be formed on opaque supports, such as paper, or on transparent supports, such as glass.
