Le Polyphote is a compact tray-based stereoscope that forms part of the product line of compact viewers designed by Lucien Bize.
Operation
The upper section of the viewer can be opened. A slide tray is placed onto the base plate, which is fitted on both sides with grooved conveyor bands. After the housing is closed, a glass stereoview is selected by turning a butterfly-shaped knob on the right-hand side counter-clockwise. Two metal fingers rise from the underside of the viewer, lift a slide from the tray, and position it in front of the lenses. By turning the butterfly knob clockwise, the metal fingers descend and return the slide to the tray. The conveyor bands simultaneously advance the tray, allowing the next image to be viewed.
On the left-hand side, a small rotary knob enables the tray to be transported rapidly in order to navigate quickly to a specific slide. A small fold-out mirror on the right-hand side displays the number of the selected slide.
