Open system

An open system in the context of a stereoscope refers to viewers in which the stereoview is placed in an open construction. During viewing, the observer remains aware of the surrounding environment. Reflections from incoming light and reduced contrast may result in a diminished viewing experience compared to closed systems.

An advantage of an open system is that it often supports multiple stereoview formats, making such stereoscopes more universal in use.
