The stereoscope was manufactured and sold by Carl Zeiss Jena. The instrument was also distributed by the optical company Oculus. Oculus may also have held a licence to produce the viewer. The Stereoskop model 1928 was a replacement for the Verant, introduced in 1903.

The stereoscope could be equipped with different lenses. As with the Verant stereoscopes by Zeiss, it was likely primarily intended for scientific and industrial use.
