Hand-held stereoscopes are compact and portable. The vast majority of stereoscopes produced were of the hand-held type. This category includes the Brewster-type stereoscope, the later derived box-type viewer, and the Holmes–Bates stereoscope. The view mode of a hand-held stereoscope is generally single-view, although some multi-view designs exist.
