Diableries
Region: France Period: 1850–1890 / 1890–1930Diableries were a genre of French stereoviews depicting scenes set in a fantastical underworld populated by devils and skeletons. The images were satirical, using infernal and supernatural settings to comment on contemporary French society, politics, morality, and human behaviour. They were published by multiple French publishers from the early 1860s until around 1900.
The scenes depicted in the Diableries were modelled in clay by skilled sculptors and then photographed with a stereoscopic camera. The images were published as tissue stereoviews.
