Clément & Gilmer was founded in 1890 by Eugène Gaston Clément and Georges Arthur Gilmer. The foundation coincided with the acquisition of the company owned by Arthur Laverne, which specialised in projection devices, including magic lanterns. Clément & Gilmer continued the production of magic lanterns and also manufactured cameras, optical instruments, and stereoscopes. The company registered its only stereoscope design patent in 1904. From around 1910 onwards, the company was operated independently by Clément.
