Book stereoscope

Tag: Glossary

A book stereoscope is a hand-held stereoscope primarily intended for viewing stereoviews mounted in books. The instrument typically has a frame that can be placed over the stereoview on the page and viewed from above.

Some book stereoscopes also include a holder for individual stereoviews, allowing them to function as a conventional hand stereoscope. An example is the Mirror Stereoscope produced by Smith, Beck & Beck. There are also examples in which the stereo lenses are integrated into the cover of the book itself.
