Stereoscopy

Stereoscopy

Stereoscopy is a technique used to create the perception of depth when viewing stereoscopic images. The stereoscope was invented in 1832 and first demonstrated in 1838 by the English scientist Charles Wheatstone. In 1849, the Scottish scientist David Brewster introduced an improved and more compact lenticular stereoscope.

The widespread adoption of stereoscopy began around 1856 and led to a major popular craze known as “stereoscopomania” in the United Kingdom. Publishers began mass-producing and selling stereoviews, while the London Stereoscopic Company promoted the stereoscope with the slogan no home without a stereoscope.
