Mackenstein

Mackenstein

Hermann Mackenstein was born in Germany. In the late 1870s he established a camera workshop in Paris, which developed into a major camera manufacturing firm in the city. At the beginning of the twentieth century, strong anti-German sentiment in France repeatedly forced Mackenstein to emphasise the French identity of his company. After the outbreak of World War I, his property was confiscated and he fled to the neutral Netherlands. Mackenstein returned to Paris in 1922. His company was continued by two of his employees, Henri Suffize and Léon Molitor.
