Atrium

Atrium

Jules Richard took advantage of the more tolerant attitude toward nude photography in France. Soon after the launch of his Vérascope camera, he produced one of the first series of erotic stereoviews.

In 1909, Richard built an atrium in an ancient Roman style next to his house in Paris. He used the location as a photographic studio. Inside the atrium, and in the surrounding gardens, erotic photographs were taken by him and other photographers. The models posed in a mythological setting inspired by classical antiquity, a context intended to make the images more acceptable.
