Stereoscopic Medallion

Region: United States    Period: 1850–1890    Tag: Mascher

The Stereoscopic Medallion was designed by John Frederick Mascher. It was a miniature stereoscope intended to be worn as a piece of jewellery. The two oval sections of the medallion contained a daguerreotype image. After opening the medallion, a small lens panel could be extended, allowing the two images to be viewed as a stereoview.

The Stereoscopic Medallion was probably produced only on a very limited scale, and no surviving examples are currently known.
