Robert Pleyau was a manufacturer of stereoscopes. In 1913, he acquired the workshop of Lucien Bize, who had designed and produced a range of compact stereoscopes. Pleyau continued manufacturing these products and introduced L'Astra, based on Bize's last patent.
The production probably ceased during the First World War, as the stereoscopes no longer appeared in catalogues or advertisements after the war.
In 1926, Pleyau was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for breach of trust. His company was subsequently declared bankrupt.
